Winter brings Lights, Shows and Specials to the desert

Written by
Sonya English
Desert Post Weekly

While much of the country is snowed in by their white Christmases, a desert winter is all about comfort and joy. It's a good thing, because it makes for easy travel to the holiday events throughout the valley now through the New Year's. Whatever your holiday tradition — carols and Christmas trees, unwrapping tamales or watching “The Nutcracker” — you're likely to find it here. This makes for more than 12 days of festivities, but we pored over annual favorites to bring you a dozen events that are sure to make your season bright. Christmas tree lighting ceremony at Frances Stevens Park featuring traditional Christmas carols, a visit from Santa on a fire truck and more. An evening of Holiday music featuring today’s hottest Broadway and television stars, including JoAnne Worley, Bobbie Eakes, Wilson Cruz, Milena Govich, and many more. A quintessential holiday ballet with three performances of Tchaikovsky's beloved classic. Celebrate nearly 20 years of holiday magic at The Living Desert's WildLights Holiday Festival. Bigger and better than ever, this year's event glistens with thousands of twinkling lights, dazzling displays, live music, festive games and activities, plus the new children's Holiday Express trackless train ride! Designed after a traditional 19th century steam engine, this colorful train ride is free with admission and circles around the North Pole Holiday Tree. Added to the merry mix are carousel rides, Prancer's Playland, Santa's Corner, and Mrs. Claus' Kitchen with hot chocolate, s'mores, holiday-themed Wildlife Wonder Shows, wood-burning fireplaces, and more! Generously sponsored by the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation with additional support from The City of Indian Wells.

  1. WildLights - A nearly 20-year tradition of lighting The Living Desert continues this year with the biggest WildLights Holiday Festival yet.
  2. Christmas lights in Cathedral City - The Simmons family's Dancing Christmas Lights Show on Estio Road is kind of big deal.
  3. Christmas Tree Lane - The lights on Christmas trees often twinkle like stars, but on El Paseo the trees are likely to be designed by or for a star.
  4. Gingerbread Village - Finally, sweet news about housing: A Gingerbread Village went up at Miramonte Resort & Spa in Indian Wells and will be on display through Christmas.
  5. Festival of Lights Parade - Around 80,000 people are expected to flock to this year's parade through downtown Palm Springs...
  6. International Tamale Festival - Turkey-and-yam-stuffed tamales soaked in gravy isn't exactly a time-honored holiday tradition, but in its 20th year...
  7. Palm Springs Aerial Tramway - Actor and comedian Ronnie Schell will light the 50-foot-tall tree while the Palm Springs High School choir performs holiday songs.
  8. Breakfasts with Santa - Kids rejoice, Santa's coming to town for no fewer than four breakfasts. Information: (760) 777-7090.

How the West got wired: America marks 150th anniversary of the world's first social network

By Associated Press
Last updated at 5:01 PM on 24th October 2011

Long before the iPad, before people were social networking and instant messaging, Americans had already got wired. October 24th 2011 marked the 150th anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental telegraph. From sea to sea, it electronically knitted together a nation that was simultaneously tearing itself apart, North and South, in the Civil War. Americans soon saw that a breakthrough in the spread of technology could enhance national identity and, just as today, that it could vastly change lives. 'It was huge,' says Amy Fischer, archivist for Western Union, which strung the line across mountains, canyons and tribal lands to make the final connection. '... With the Civil War just a few months old, the idea that California, the growing cities of California, could talk to Washington and the East Coast in real time was huge. It's hard to overstate the impact of that.' On October 24, 1861, with the push of a button, California's chief justice, Stephen J. Field, wired a message from San Francisco to President Abraham Lincoln in Washington, congratulating him on the transcontinental telegraph's completion that day. He added the wish that it would be a 'means of strengthening the attachment which binds both the East and the West to the Union.'

A rudimentary version of the Internet — not much more advanced than two tin cans and a string — had been born. But it worked, and it grew. Just a few years after the nation was wired, telegraph technology would be extended to the rest of North America, and soon cylindrical wires from Mexico to Canada would jangle with little bursts of electromagnetic juice, sending messages of every kind and redefining how communication can mean business. As the United States rebuilt itself following the devastating Civil War, it did so in no small part with money wired from Washington. In 1869, when the final piece of track connecting the transcontinental railroad was laid in Promontory, Utah, a young news organization called The Associated Press sent a story about it out on the wire. World first: In this 1861-dated artist's rendering, a pony express rider greets Western Union linemen as they string wires of the first transcontinental telegraph World first: In this 1861-dated artist's rendering, a pony express rider greets Western Union linemen as they string wires of the first transcontinental telegraph Knitted together: This 1864 photograph is titled 'Field telegraph station, Wilcox's Landing, Virginia, vicinity of Charles City Court House.' 'I really see the telegraph as the original technology, the grandfather of all these other technologies that came out of it: the telephone, the teletype, the fax, the Internet,' said telegraph historian Thomas Jepsen, author of 'My Sisters Telegraphic: Women In Telegraph Office 1846-1950.' In its time, the telegraph was in some ways an even greater influence on the way people communicate than the Internet is today.

Life in hard times: Dreamy images document misery and merriment during the Great Depression in the South

By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 6:07 AM on 5th November 2011

344808_Holiday Banner 10% off - Rectangle

From the fresh-faced children playing in the streets to those much more worse-for-wear, an exhibit is showcasing the era of the of the Great Depression through a photographer’s lens. An exhibit of photographs from the 1930s and 1940s and the work of contemporary artist and filmmaker Peter Sekaer are both providing an up-close glimpse into the everyday lives of depression-era southerners. 'Signs of Life; Photographs of Peter Sekaer,' which began this month at the International Center for Photography and runs through January 8, 2012, is the first major museum exhibit dedicated to Sekaer's work. The photographs sometimes focused on race relations, allowing the stark images to help fuel the engine of social change, she said. Aside from the content, the formal qualities of the photographs reflect a kind of modernism: straightforward, and sometimes austere. And their impact was lasting. 'It would be hard to find documentary photographers who don't point to this era,' Lubben said. Though his work was very well-received, Sekaer slipped into obscurity in the 1940s. He was only 49 years old when he died of a heart attack in 1950.

The Kindle Fire (7 inches) is a bit smaller than iPad (about 9.5 inches), but it has some rivaling capabilities. Fire features a dual-core processor with wi-fi capability but does not have a camera or 3G wireless access like its more expensive competitors. Amazon is also offering free cloud storage to customers of the devices. Since most of the content is backed Amazon’s cloud, the Kindle Fire is also wirelessly synced to the cloud service, eliminating the need for users to manually back-up or sync their content. AND Amazon has included its Whispersync technology, which delivers digital books to the Kindle and now will also work with movies and television shows. The benefit here is that people will be able to view a movie or TV show on their home TV, pause it, and then pick up where they left off on their Kindle Fire, much like Netflix allows people to do between its TV, PC, and mobile apps.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos told BusinessWeek “We don’t think of the Kindle Fire as a tablet. We think of it as a service.” Amazon also announced a new browser — Silk — to enhance the web browsing experience on its tablets. PC World reports: Silk is different from other browsers because it can be configured to let Amazon’s cloud service do much of the work assembling complex Web pages. The result is that users may experience much faster load times for Web pages, compared to other mobile devices, according to the company. “The modern Web has become a complicated place,” Bezos said. As a result, “It is difficult — challenging — for mobile devices to display modern Web pages rapidly.” To speed page rendering on the Kindle Fire, Silk uses a “split browser” approach, Bezos said. “It partially lives in EC2 and it partially lives on Kindle Fire.”

Fighting cleavage wrinkles

Back when Lisa Barr wore a size 34B bra, she didn't know about cleavage wrinkles. But soon after she got breast implants in 1999, augmenting her measurements to a 36C, she started waking up with thick lines on her chest where one breast had fallen against the other as she slept on her side...The skin just below the neck can reveal a woman's age and skin-care history just as easily as her hands can. Cleavage wrinkles are deep, vertical creases caused by hours spent sleeping on one's side, where gravity forces the top breast to bend farther past the body's midline than it should. The lines can also be caused by sports and push-up bras, which squash the breasts together and are often worn for hours. Once the collagen in skin breaks down from age and sun exposure, those wrinkles tend to linger. In the bleak light of the Depression

Rare colour photographs of the era that defined a generation

By Daily Mail Reporter - JLast updated at 9:31 AM on 18th May 2011

It was an era that defined a generation. The Great Depression marked the bitter and abrupt end to the post-World War I bubble that left America giddy with promise in the 1920s. Near the end of the 1930s the country was beginning to recover from the crash, but many in small towns and rural areas were still poverty-stricken. These rare photographs are some of the few documenting those iconic years in colour. The photographs and captions are the property of the Library of Congress and were included in a 2006 exhibit Bound for Glory: America in Color.

The images, by photographers of the Farm Security Administration/Office of War Information, shed a bleak new light on a world now gone with the wind.
